About

This study analyzes factors affecting China's birth rate from 2013-2022, using data from 31 regions. It finds regional variations.

Signature Work Project Overview

This study examines the factors influencing China’s birth rate in the context of an aging population. Utilizing panel data from 31 provincial-level administrative regions in China for the period 2013 to 2022, it estimates the impacts of per capita disposable income, the number of maternity insurance participants, and the number of graduates from general high schools on the birth rate using two-way fixed effects, spatial Durbin models and other models. The results show that: at the national level, the number of general high school graduates has a negative and significant impact on the resident birth rate; in the eastern region, per capita disposable income has a negative and significant impact on the resident birth rate; in the western region, per capita disposable income has a positive and significant impact on the resident birth rate; in the spatial effect, the per capita disposable income in the region has a positive and significant impact on the resident birth rate, the number of general high school graduates has a positive and significant impact on the birth rate of the region.
