People with non-communicable diseases (NCD) are at higher risk of developing depression. This study aims to identify factors associated with incident depression among Chinese urban residents with hypertension or type 2 diabetes.
In 2019 and 2020, we collected data from 12 communities in Shanghai and Suzhou with an interviewer-administered questionnaire among residents aged ≥ 45 (n=678). Depression was defined as Patient Health Questionnaire-9 ≥ 8. We used logistic regressions to examine factors associated with incident (newly developed) depression.
We found that females, not being physically active, and living in a dysfunctional family was significantly associated with incident depression among people with hypertension or diabetes. Our findings could help community health practitioners identify people at higher risk of developing depression and potentially provide timely preventative measures.
