Signature Work Project Overview

Since the introduction of electric scooters in 2018, SMEs have had a breakthrough opportunity in the micro-mobility sector. While regulations multiplied, local governments have failed in keeping up with the pace of the evolution of technology and the economy. This project analyzes the relationship between innovation, entrepreneurial processes, and governmental regulations that arise in a new undeveloped industry. Policy analysis and empirical research will be conducted with the Cities of Charlotte and Raleigh and two popular micro-mobility startups Lime and Bird. Results show information asymmetry created regulatory constraints that negatively govern entrepreneurial development, specifically responding promptly to business feedback and actively reforming regulations. Should reform ever happen in North Carolina, an increase in scooter rideability can positively raise community awareness, adherence to safety protocols, and R&D funding.
