With the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, smartphones are being used to help track the spread of COVID-19. This paper aims to look at how a contact-tracing technology in China, the “Health Code”, has been implemented in the Yuhang district of Hangzhou and the Tianfu subdistrict of Chengdu. There are many important discussions around this technology, including the types of data that are utilized to determine the status of the health code. Furthermore, there are many social factors that are important to consider when discussing the health code and how it has impacted the lives of Chinese citizens. Through a literature review, this paper attempts to answer these questions. However, there is not one answer, each city has a different approach to utilizing the health code
