Signature Work Project Overview

Gender discrimination in the Chinese job market is very severe. The statistics from the China Labor Statistics Yearbook in 2019 show that the proportion of female employees varies greatly in different industries. The recent studies on gender discrimination regarding work disclose mainly two types of job discrimination in the job market. The first one is exclusively for women due to the long-rooted traditional bias and the biological disadvantage of women. The second one is the gender stereotype on positions that have obvious gender orientation in a common-sense such as nurses and security guards. However, according to the extracting information from Zhaopin, the nowadays number of jobs that includes gender requirement is very rare. That’s because employers often do not disclose gender preferences directly for fear of being punished by the government. In order to help job seekers discover gender discrimination in the job market, the study tries to detect the potential gender discrimination hidden in the soft skills requirements of job descriptions in recruiting markets of Shanghai and Beijing. Besides that, the study also further figures out whether the preference of gender in the job recruitment will influence the salary of that job.
