| The fast fashion industry has exacerbated the environmental and ethical issues arising from the use of animal leather. Using the Sustainable Design concept as the theoretical basis and bio-design as the methodology, this article tends to propose material solutions for the fashion industry’s sustainable development and to fundamentally improve its supply chain structure. Liquid cultured Mycelium and Kombucha SCOBY are the two biologically derived materials this article mainly focuses on. As a Signature Work in Media Art practice track, this article will include research and cultivation of biodegradable and environmentally friendly biomaterials in the laboratory; verification of its potential similarity to leather in terms of texture and handling methodologies including beading, carving, and three-dimensional weaving; and a modular open-source bag kit design. Through the product design, this Signature work project, on the other hand, explores the possibility of biomaterials as an alternative to animal leather; on the other hand, hopes to reconstruct the consumers’ over-purchasing action framework and guide the generation of healthy consumption habits. |
