| “The process of adaptation takes time. The difference in race, ethnicity, religion, traditions, and even cuisine makes students feel uncomfortable for several months. During that time, it is hard to control and find the initial internal issue. Also, most of the DKU students come to China without knowledge of the Chinese language which creates barriers between them and local people. Being unable to explain what you want and not finding a friend could lead to feelings of loneliness. Leaving the home country for the dream and facing the reality of isolation could mentally break the individual. The hard study, loneliness, and the feeling of being a stranger in a community lead to mental health issues. All these factors can cause suicide, which is the second most common reason for death among adolescents aged 15-19 years (WHO, Suicide, 2021). |
To prevent severe outcomes of mental health problems for students, it is important to get on-time counseling and psychological services. The promotion of seeking mental health support at DKU needs a detailed literature review of suicide reasons and suicide prevention with an understanding of the suicide behavior nature. To fill the gap in the incentives at Duke Kunshan University in the prevention of mental health problems of students, the broad question that this project would answer is which suicide reduction interventions are applicable on the DKU campus.
