This paper examines a group of pro-China social media users who present themselves as foreigners and defend China’s stance against Western media and narratives on Twitter. As China seeks to expand its cultural and ideological impact on the international community, these “China defenders” play an important role in shaping the country’s global reputation. This project employs interdisciplinary methods from data science and traditional communications research, including social network analysis, to analyze the self-presentations, content strategies, and interaction patterns of these influencers. By identifying a new form of interaction and categorizing subgroups of influencers based on metrics and content analysis, the study provides insights into their behavior and suggests avenues for further research. Overall, this work contributes to the literature on influencer behavior and China’s soft power strategy.
