About
The Effectiveness of Weight Management Intervention on Gestational Weight Gain and Postpartum Weight Retention among Women with Obesity in China
Signature Work Project Overview
Maternal obesity has increased considerably among women of reproductive age in the last decades in China. It not only affects women’s health but also the children’s. Thus, the weight management of reproductive-aged women is essential.
This review aims to examine the effects of weight management interventions on gestational weight gain, and identify the most appropriate timing and type of interventions that might optimize gestational weight management results among Chinese women of reproductive age. Eight databases were searched and four different subgroup analyses were also discussed.
Thirty-one RCTs with 4644 participants were included in analysis. The results indicate that if an intervention starts earlier, lasts for a longer period, is comprehensive, personalized and face-to-face, it is more likely to be more effective.
This review narrows down the types of effective weight management interventions for reproductive-aged women in China, which helps fill in this academic gap and is helpful for the healthcare providers to make more detailed weight management plans for maternal women. However, more studies are needed to validate the findings, and studies with longer follow-up period are needed to determine the long-term effects.
