The Asian black bear Ursus thibetanus is a species of great significance to the ecosystem. However, its population has been decreasing, making it a vulnerable species. In various countries, research focuses and protection measures for Asian black bears are different although the key drivers for their population decline are similar. Despite the extensive effort dedicated to the conservation of Asian black bears, there has been no comprehensive review on this topic at the global distribution scale of the Asian black bear to guide future efforts. To make the national conservation efforts more effective, this study aims to 1) identify the main factors for the endangerment of Asian black bears, and 2) summarize current and proposed measures respectively towards Asian black bear conservation in different areas. The results show that the main factors for the reduction of the Asian black bear population are human-animal conflict, bear parts trade, and habitat destruction. Finally, according to the specific situation of each country, this review makes suggestions for future research direction and policy improvement for the conservation of Asian black bears in specific regions.
