Signature Work Project Overview

This project examines translated Chinese science fiction through the milestone work of Liu Cixin’s Three-Body trilogy, the first work by a Chinese author to win the Hugo award in science fiction. This project carries out a review of the history of Chinese science fiction, as well as the overall significance of speculative fiction more broadly in its global impact in understanding the past and anticipating the future. Through analysis of the written work of Liu compared to that of classic canonical political science thinkers, this work seeks to understand the ways in which Liu’s work accepts and rejects many of the foundational beliefs in the field, culminating in reflections on the simultaneous uniqueness and universality of Liu’s work.
