Signature Work Project Overview

This study delves into the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in China, a topic that has seen limited research. By analyzing 37 Bilibili self-media videos created by LGBTQ+ individuals from mainland China, the study uncovers significant social determinants impacting their well-being. The videos touch upon crucial aspects of life including family dynamics, school experiences, workplace discrimination, and access to healthcare. Using Infranodus, a text graph analysis tool, the researchers extract key insights from the translated video texts. They identify themes such as parental acceptance, school bullying, employment discrimination, and financial barriers to gender-affirming surgeries. These findings offer a candid glimpse into the realities of LGBTQ+ individuals in contemporary China. Moreover, the study suggests the need for more robust methodologies to gather online data on this population. Understanding these issues is crucial for developing effective strategies to support and advocate for the well-being of LGBTQ+ communities in China.
