| In many places around the world, trans individuals are denied access to necessary gender-affirming health care, lack legal protections, and face harmful stigmas, bias, and discrimination. This can be very detrimental to their overall health and well-being. Even in Finland, which is often lauded as quite progressive regarding LGBTQ+ rights, still lacks in terms of trans health care. To better understand how this policy has come about and its impacts, I studied its progression, influences, and changes via semi-formal, qualitative interviews and literature review. From this project, I found that transgender healthcare in Finland has three main themes. These are the inaccessibility of trans healthcare, discrimination in the healthcare system and larger society, and institutional difficulties in returning to society. |
