Signature Work Project Overview
In this study, I will take the #MeToo movement as the background context and the law popularization activities in China represented by Luo Xiang’s work as the main research object. Within the background context of the MeToo movement, this study will explore how Luo Xiang’s approach embodies a similar potential within the sphere of law popularization. The MeToo movement offers a salient feature, which is decentralized movements’ impact on public consciousness, even within seemingly rigid sociopolitical contexts.
The MeToo Movement and China’s law popularization in the new media era have something in common in form: they both develop through social media. The MeToo movement usually spreads on social media in a fixed and clear format, that is, tweets with the #Metoo hashtag. The latter mainly popularize law in the form of videos and article published on social media platforms. The former focuses on sexual assault and harassment that women encounter in work and life, which were once considered difficult to discuss openly. The latter is the discussion of hot social events related to the rule of law, which are usually controversial criminal cases. The #MeToo movement has certainly experienced a globalization over the past few years, moving away from its initial origins in the United States. The movement is gaining wider attention and support globally as more individuals in different countries begin to share their experiences of sexual harassment and assault.
