Signature Work Project Overview

Athlete burnout affects many athletes around the world and is preventable when athletes and coaches are aware of the causes of symptoms. This review aims to compare 19 studies from North America, Europe, Eurasia, and Asia which use the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire to measure burnout in athletes around the world to compare the main determinants of athlete burnout. This review will analyze several overlapping categories of factors which contribute to athlete burnout: motivational factors, coaching styles and prevention methods. Motivational factors play a significant role in why an individual may engage in certain activities and sports. The self-determination theory and continuum can be used to assess what factors drive an individual the most. In addition to intrapersonal factors, the interpersonal relationships formed between coaches and athletes can be predicative of an athlete’s relationship with their sport and training. There are many types of coaching methods, but it is important to examine the relationship that culture plays in relationship to the different coaching techniques. As athlete burnout has become more prevalent, different coping strategies and support methods have been discussed to better understand how to reduce athlete burnout from occurring in the future.
