In the world of conservation, Jiangsu Province is famous for its intertidal mudflats on the coast of the Yellow sea, which serve as critical stopover sites for migratory birds of the East-Asian Australasian Flyway. Due to their flat, wide, nature, mudflats provide unique foraging and resting grounds for migratory waterbirds. You may think, what are they eating, the mudflat looks pretty barren! But in reality, there is a world of benthic macroinvertebrates that live right under the surface, from crabs to worms to snails to clams. Not only do these macroinvertebrates provide food for waterbirds, fish, and even humans, they help shape their surroundings by assisting with nutrient and sediment cycling. This research quantifies the benthic community of Lianyungang. |
