This study investigates the connection between the Japanese animation (“anime”) industry’s expansion and the rise of algorithm-driven social media, specifically focusing on TikTok, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach combining literature review and historiography with descriptive statistical analysis, the investigation examines how TikTok’s content recommendation algorithm and user-generated content have influenced anime’s visibility and global trajectory. Non-TikTok sources of growth, including the development of digital fandom spaces and indirect destigmatization of anime by celebrities, are also discussed.
