Signature Work Project Overview
The study focused on reframing social media to support female sexual and reproductive health and rights in China. Specifically, the research examined the impact of revising gender-biased statements on reducing hostile sexism among participants. Participants were shown original posts from Chinese authoritative media on Weibo related to women’s sexual and reproductive health, and half of them were shown revised versions aimed at reducing stereotypes and stigmas. Participants were then asked to rate the extent of their agreement or disagreement with the original posts and suggest revisions to promote women’s sexual and reproductive health.
The results suggest that revising gender-biased statements can be an effective strategy for reducing hostile sexism, although it did not significantly reduce benevolent sexism. There was no significant difference between men and women in their reduction of sexist attitudes (p-value), although men tended to reduce their sexist attitudes more than women. Further analysis revealed that the degree of reduction in hostile sexism was related to the extent to which participants chose to revise their statements, as well as the number of statements they revised.
