Migraine is a prevalent headache that could severely affect daily livings for more than 1 billion sufferers worldwide. The need to explore and identify potential remedies that could alleviate migraine attacks in a quick and easy manner is strongly desired. The purpose of this signature work project is to test whether a cold pressor (a mild pain) on hand could be used as an abortive therapy in migraine attacks. Results suggest that cold pressor is not only a short-term remedy for alleviating immediate migraine attacks as it could immediately alleviate migraine for patients within 3 minutes of the test and reduce the pain intensity level of migraine after 3 minutes, but also a long-term treatment to reduce the occurrence of migraines as numbers and duration of migraine attacks are significantly decreased after the cold-pressor experiment. Future studies and replications with greater sample size are still needed.
