Signature Work Project Overview

Media plays an important role in shaping public opinion and facilitating communication by sharing information. In Ethiopia, however, the media faces many challenges that hinder its function. People have always complained about communication being controlled by the government. And there are instances where conflicts have risen because of the government trying to control and manipulate the media. However, when there is freedom of speech and increase in media outlets or social media sources that are separate from the government, we see a huge division among the different media that are mostly ethnically biased and have much more increased hatred towards one another. People involved in politics and media are usually seen dragging the country backwards when they should be working hand in hand to make sure the country progresses towards a better future. As an Ethiopian, my experiences and background in studying ethics will be an addition to the existing perspectives aiming to make the media better and improve the development of the country. This research paper aims to explore the factors contributing to the weakness of Ethiopian media, examine the extent to which ethics are considered in media reporting, and discuss the benefits of promoting ethical journalism in Ethiopia.
