Signature Work Project Overview

In this signature work project, potential epigenetic regulatory mechanisms in the arsenic and lead stress responses were determined using reverse genetic screening and next-generation sequencing. Among all tested knock-out epigenetic modules, enzymes that mediate chromatin modification, DNA methylation, and RNA production contribute to the heavy metal stress responses. The altered expression level of the ABC transporters can be the key to explaining the phenotypic changes in the reserve genetic screening. The findings support the involvement of epigenetics in controlling gene expression levels and therefore mediate the physiological responses to non-biotic environmental stresses. Moreover, this study is an example of utilizing the mutant availability of Arabidopsis thaliana for reverse genetic screening to reveal the epigenetic control of cellular functions and plant physiological reactions.
