Signature Work Project Overview

Nurse prescribing has become a critical issue in healthcare as many countries seek to expand the role of nurses in prescribing medication and performing medical procedures. This mixed-method study aimed to investigate the attitudes of the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) nurses and physicians towards PICC nurse prescribing in China and to identify the factors influencing these attitudes. A total of 758 PICC nurses participated in the survey, and three nurses and four oncologists participated in the interview. The results indicated that the majority of nurses and physicians were supportive of nurse prescribing, with the most common reasons being improved patient care and time-saving for physicians. Variables such as duration of clinical practice, professional rank, and educational attainment influenced attitudes toward nurse prescribing. The study also identified collaboration between nurses and physicians as a key factor influencing attitudes towards nurse prescribing, with both groups recognizing that nurse prescribing can enhance collaboration among healthcare providers. This study provides important insights into the attitudes and factors that influence nurse prescribing in China and offers guidance for policymakers and healthcare providers seeking to promote and support nurse prescribing in practice.
