My Signature Work research focuses on the potential impacts of the digital nature in the metaverse on human-nature interactions. To examine how digital nature can shape our perceptions and interactions with the natural world, I analyzed YouTube comments on Animal Crossing videos by applying machine learning techniques such as text classification and topic modeling. Animal Crossing is a life simulation game that closely resembles the metaverse for its virtual open-world setting, multiplayer features, and online connection. The results of my study suggest that the game cultivates appreciation for the beauty of nature, promotes curiosity and exploration of wildlife, and reinforces learning about various species and the environment. However, Animal Crossing also encourages the overuse of natural resources for personal gain and promotes harmful interactions with nature such as over-mining minerals and shaking trees excessively. Using these results, my research provides multiple insights into the development of digital nature within the metaverse.
