| As the newest web iteration, Web3 has gained increasing popularity recently. Along with this popularity is the boom of an essential component of Web3, the non-fungible token (NFT). However, as with the previous two web iterations, both NFT and the overall Web3 ecosystem have shown a severe deficiency of gender diversity. Some feminist NFT projects that are concerned with crypto philanthropy focus primarily on donating crypto assets to empower real-world issues such as education and health, while ignoring that bringing underrepresented and marginalized groups to the new blockchain-powered web iteration might be a more crucial route to crypto philanthropy. Therefore, this project explores an interdisciplinary approach to creating feminist NFT PFPs that situate among documentary media, cyberfeminism, and crypto art. By collecting one hundred real-life stories of gender discrimination experienced by Chinese females from Chinese social media and manually crossing them out to mint NFT PFPs for free distribution to project contributors, this project aims to increase the gender diversity of Web3, onboard more Chinese females to the new web iteration, and thus contribute to the boost of fourth-wave feminism. The whole creative practice process of the project also works as a feminist activism to contribute to female empowerment at the intersection of the real world and cyberspace, thus expanding the scope of crypto philanthropy. |
