Signature Work Project Overview

The World Bank is a global organization with the mission of ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity in a sustainable manner. This paper analyzes data released by the World Bank on the projects it funds. Funding received by countries varies significantly based on sector and population; however, the need for investment in infrastructure and healthcare sectors is not a strong predictor of funding allocation. Infrastructure investment is heavily concentrated in a few countries with moderate to high needs, whereas healthcare investment is distributed more evenly among countries with low to moderate needs. The World Bank ensures that countries with a high need for healthcare investment receive at least some funding. Moreover, the World Bank invests more heavily in creditworthy nations, likely to preserve its long-term stability. Although the review of the World Bank’s performance in resource allocation is mostly positive, the Bank could potentially fulfill its goals more effectively by being less conservative in its investments in creditworthy and previously funded countries, and allocating more resources to those with a high need.
