Signature Work Project Overview

“In the introduction to “Wicked Are The Roots Of This Twisted Tree,” a collection of short stories, I explore my authorial voice, questioning what voice is and how it is constructed. Considering how historical framing, ethics pertaining to appropriation and representation, and style come together in the writing process, I contextualize my writing practice within the genres and traditions of New Journalism and the Southern Gothic and explain how my training as a historian and journalist influences my creative writing practice. I also examine my own positionality. Five works written over the past year reflect the stages of finding my voice. “In the Truth” follows an undocumented man who secretly becomes a crypto-currency billionaire but whose immigration status prevents him from safely accessing his wealth. “The Engineer of Crete” is a fantastical tale, reimagining the story of Daedalus and Icarus and lampooning the author through the character of Daedalus, who believes he is the smartest man alive. “Anya Vasilyeva” explores a complicated relationship between a woman and three men in New York, delving into questions about the nature of love. “The Anelf” is a fantasy in which two groups are identical in every way except for an arbitrary ethnic distinction and follows a brother and a sister whose existences straddle that boundary. Finally, the collection concludes with “Wicked Are The Roots Of This Twisted Tree” a mythic story about the farm on which I grew up, placing the land in the context of slavery and racial violence.”
