Signature Work Project Overview

This paper examines the online trolling towards Yang Li for her punchline “men are so mediocre and yet so confident” on a standup comedy reality show by using Kate Manne’s notion of misogyny. It aims to answer questions like what are the netizens doing when they conduct the online trolling towards Yang Li? Why cannot men laugh with women on a joke about them like women laugh with men on jokes about women as bad drivers and other stereotypes? Why do some men stand out for those “average men” when they are not even the ones that are targeted at? Why are they not angry with other female comedians who also tell jokes of gender? Why Yang Li? By answering these questions, I intend to give a feminist understanding of the motivation behind the hostile behavior towards women, especially women like Yang Li. I aim to make contributions to existing discussions of Chinese feminism by making an in-depth, empirically based and theoretically nuanced understanding of the backlash towards feminism in China.
