In the face of the heated discussion on the influence of gender discrimination in today’s society, traditional attitudes about the status and role of women are still creating a biased context that stands in the way of women and girls fully exercising their right to benefit from higher education. In this paper, I focus on gender discrimination in the workplace and the unequal gender status in marital relationships. By using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, this paper is aimed at examining how female undergraduates’ GPA rankings are affected by gender discrimination in the workplace and gender inequality in marital relationships. This paper found that the difference in undergraduate GPA of Chinese female college students is related to the difference in their perception of gender discrimination in the workplace: the GPA rankings of female college students during their undergraduate studies will be negatively affected by their expectations for the gender discrimination in the workplace; however, for women who have recognized that gender discrimination in the workplace could significantly undermine their career competitiveness, they are motivated to study harder and achieve higher GPA rankings during undergraduate studies. Also, the negative expectation of gender inequality in marital relationships can spur female college students to achieve higher GPA rankings. Based on these results, further discussion will be given on policies for eliminating gender discrimination in workplaces and views of marriage.
