The significant use of machines marks modernity, enabling mass production in art. Original artworks can be easily replicated and mechanically produced in large amounts. There is a debate of whether the mechanical reproduction of violins harms the artistic value of violin-making.
The main component of this project is a documentary film on the violin-making industry in China, consisting of footage of a violin factory and a violin luthier shop.
The documentary approaches this debate by interviewing a violin factory owner, workers from the violin factory, and a famous violin luthier. Moreover, the documentary The Making of a Violin demonstrates the difference between mass-manufactured violins and hand-crafted violins by using different visuals for the factory and the luthier shop. The workers in the factory think of their work as art while the independent violin luthier holds a different opinion.
