Rice Journey is an interactive dining interface and installation that aims to educate the public on the history and culture of rice preparation in China through multi-sensory design methods. Rice Journey began as an exploration of embedding interactive, digital technologies into the dining experience in a non-disruptive way that enhances the experience for participants and users. Through deeper research into food culture and global food networks, the project has expanded its scope of interest to also include cultural stories behind food products. Rice Journey critically assesses existing trends in the design of interactive dining and aims to create an educational platform and approach toward current commercialized interactive dining in bringing out the relationship between food, people, and the environment. In doing so, Rice Journey hopes to illustrate the significant cultural function of food in generating relationships and cultural practices. The artistic direction and design of Rice Journey take inspiration from the history and culture of rice in China, utilizing both visual, audio, interactive, and tactile design in the final execution of the project.
