By joining the Paris Agreement in 2015, Italy pledged to decarbonize its electricity mix by 2050. Around 73% of global CO2 emissions come from electricity generation, thus decarbonizing this sector will prove crucial in the global effort to contain the effects of climate change. In the shorter term, Italy aims to generate 55% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Assuming that Italy will achieve this target, this study looks at how the reintroduction of nuclear power in its production mix would impact the transition to a zero-emission mix in 2050. The paper compares the costs and benefits of a scenario where 25% of electricity is generated through nuclear power against an alternative scenario where the electricity mix only consists of renewable sources.
