Signature Work Project Overview

In China Game Industry Report (2021), the popularity of game consumption is 666 million in 2021. With the increasing number of game players, the game motivation has become a topic worth investigating. This paper aims at analyzing game motivations, personalities, etc. to reveal the future development of Chinese game industry. This paper adds and reorganizes game motivations based on Zsolt et al.’s online survey (2011), clarifying six motivation factors: enjoyment, competition, social interaction, investment, skill improvement, and escape reality. By creating six motivation factors, this paper examines the proportion of game motivations of each participant and analyzes the correlation between motivations and personal backgrounds, motivations and playing objects, motivations and personalities, and motivations and investment behaviors through an online survey among Chinese game players. A total of 1,127 participants were recruited through the MAX+ platform and Steam platform to conduct the survey. The result suggests that investment has become a major game motivation among Chinese adult players. Meanwhile, personalities have an impact on game motivations. The motivations and personalities are correlated with time spent on online games and game derivatives, which may become a reason for online game addiction.
