The research theme of this project is the aggravating peer pressure in China’s education. Recently, the word “neijuan” (involution) has gained rising popularity in China. Though all Chinese students strive to achieve higher grades, the chances for them to get into universities sadly remain the same. So they have no choice but to join this “endless fight” against each other. As there’s no easy solution to this problem, we plan to interpret the situation from the perspective of students themselves through a more interactive medium – the video game. The game will be a puzzle-solving adventure game. It’s set in Chinese middle school, and two main characters, a boy and a girl, would go through a bizarre journey that revolts against the fierce competition at school. We did exquisite design on game mechanics, narratives, as well as art style to create experiences about what being in “neijuan”, is like for players. Meanwhile we put efforts in level design, scene-setting and other aspects to guarantee the quality of the game itself, making the game fun to play. During the developing process, we also conducted playtests to evaluate the performance of our game and modified our design based on the feedback.
