Signature Work Project Overview

As more land is being converted for oil palm farming, much of the land in Malaysia is now classified as degraded land. Globally, Malaysia is one of the largest producers and exporters of palm oil. As a result, however, Malaysia has endured one of the highest deforestation rates globally over the last 30 years, which resulted in a 2.70Mha loss of forestry. This high deforestation rate in Malaysia indicates a need to encourage reforestation projects to combat the main drivers of Malaysia’s deforestation and land degradation. Given the spatial analysis results conducted by this signature work team, an estimated 1 million ha of land qualifies for potential reforestation. However, given current policy and Malaysia’s focus on promoting their oil palm industry, reforestation in these potential land areas is not a top priority for the country. Therefore, the current trajectory of deforestation in Malaysia is concerningly high and will not be fixed until a new policy promotes reforestation within the land that physically qualifies our sustainability and reforestation policy proposal. This project conducts a thorough literature review and presents a policy brief that addresses the aforementioned issues.
